ENSLIC
Energy Saving through Promotion of Life Cycle Analysis in Building (ENSLIC_Building) is a SAVE project financed by ICEA. The project started in October 2007, and will run to the end of March 2010, and seeks to achieve energy saving in the construction and operation of buildings by promoting the use of life cycle assessment techniques in the design for new buildings and for retrofit and refurbishment of existing buildings. It will encourage and facilitate the use of LCA amongst architects, consultants and local authorities.

The project has several objectives for reaching the main goals:

  • Encourage the use of Life Cycle Assessment methodologies by dissemination of clear step by step methodology and guidelines developed during the project, together with results of at least 25 cases studies of practical applications.
  • While drawing on the state of the art involve stakeholders in the preparation of dissemination material, including guidelines for applying different methods of calculating environmental impacts in the design of new buildings and renovation projects.
  • With cooperation from local authorities, architects and other interested users apply the methodology to real building projects and disseminate the results on web page, at workshops to showcase the methodology.
  • Collect and compare methods of environmental performance used in different countries to facilitate meaningful evaluation and communication to stakeholders including the public.
  • Support the standardisation activities of CEN TC 350 and other initiatives by taking into account the different approaches and local specificities which exist and provide input to European harmonisation activities.
  • Resolve the methodological problems related to the scope and limits of the system under study by defining needs and objectives of different user groups.
  • Facilitate comparisons and what-if scenarios to improve decision making at the design stage and provide guidelines on the use of benchmarking data.

Main target group

The main target groups are architects, Local Authorities, civil engineers and building owners. The project will mainly focus on tertiary buildings. Reaching the goal of the project requires a strong cooperation with the architects and the building owners. To ensure the development of systems suited to architects, they will be heavily involved in the project. Some architects are partners in the projects, others are a part of a Users Group and participate in the national projects but have been involved in writing the proposal and defining their own needs.
A Users Group will be set up whereby each partner will have collaborating local users (they can be an architect, Local Authority or building owner). Throughout the project each partner will liaise with their local users in contributing their needs, difficulties and experiences so that the methodology is designed to meet the needs of the market.
As part of the dissemination the projects results will be applied to real cases by members of the users group, at least one per partner, with the methodology being implemented for a real building.
Construction federations and architecture institutes will be contacted to gain access to potential users and seminars will be held to publicise the results of the project to these groups. The partners in each country have made contact with users of the methodology and guideline, as well as other stakeholders for information and dissemination.
